Missing Period (Gonzo HST184CD, 2013)

This album contains previously unreleased material from Brand X, one of the leading British jazz fusion bands of the 1970s. The recordings were made somewhere around 1975-76 and feature an explosive mix of improvisatory jazz-rock music along with more structured pieces. It has a raw feel that lets the listener absorb the essence of the band without studio gimmicks.

Missing Period was recorded before Brand X’s acclaimed first album, Unorthodox Behaviour. These recordings featuring Brand X’s classic lineup were recovered by guitarist John Goodsall from family members in England, who gave him a box containing all types of Brand X memorabilia. At the bottom of the box were several old reels of tape of unknown origin. Upon examination, John and bassist Percy Jones realized that they had unearthed a long lost musical treasure.

The lineup at the time featured Phil Collins on drums, John Goodsall on guitar, Preston Heyman on percussion, Percy Jones on bass, and Robin Lumley on keyboards.

Missing Period features outstanding individual playing and plenty of tight ensemble interplay.
