Willow’s Song E.P. (2014)

Willow’s Song is the latest solo work by Robert Reed, Magenta’s keyboard player. He is a progressive rock multi-instrumentalist who is deeply inspired by the music of Mike Oldfield. The main piece on Willow’s Song is the title song, a ballad composed by American songwriter Paul Giovanni for the 1973 cult British horror movie The Wicker Man.

As he did on is previous solo work, Robert Reed plays all musical instruments. The lead vocals on the first two songs, ‘Willow’s Song’ and the folk classic ‘Scarborough Fair’, are by talented singer Angharad Brinn. Robert Reed provides the solos and accompaniment, including the signature guitar sound that identifies Mike Oldfield’s pieces.

The rest of the recording consists of instrumental pieces. On ‘Gavotte’ Robert Reed
Lays out several different instruments, channeling Mike Oldfield’s style and technique

‘First Contact’ is another delightful piece also inspired by the work of Mike Oldfield.

The next three selections on the album are solo piano demos from the Sanctuary album sessions.

‘Pirate Section Remix’ brings back the orchestral percussion and guitar style of Mike Oldfield.

‘Ommakace Remi’ features layered vocals, percussion and solos inspired by Mike Oldfield.

Track 10 is a beautiful instrumental version of ‘Scarborough Fair’.

The last song on the EP is an extended version of Willow’s Song.

Robert Reed‘s Willow’s Song is a splendid tribute to cult film soundtracks and the legacy of Mike Oldfield.
