Solace Supplice – “Liturgies Contemporaines”

Missing the 1980s gothic-ethereal music? You just need Solace Supplice’s new album:  Liturgies Contemporaines. This album will take you back to the Cure and Depeche Mode, along with some IQ, at times. The album will be released June, 15, 2022.

Solace Supplice is made up of: Eric Bouillette, on vocals, backing vocals, guitar, keyboards, violin, arrangements, and composition; Anne-Claire Rallo, on keyboards, all lyrics, bass on “Les Miradors”, “Sunset Street”, “Schizophrénie Paranoïde”, “Au Cirque des âmes”, and “Dans la Couche du Diable”; Jimmy Pallagrosi, on drums; Willow Beggs, on bass on “Le Tartuffe Exemplaire”, “Marasmes et Décadence”, “En Guidant les Hussards”, “Cosmos Adultérin”, “Liturgies Contemporaines”, and “A Demi-Maux; and Laurent Benhamou, on saxophone on “En Guidant les Hussards”.

Alexandre Lamia, (also a member of Nine Skies), mixed and mastered the album in his studio: https://osaimal.wixsite.com/alexandrelamia, in Lamia Country, France. The artwork design was created at © Steve Anderson Label.

This is wonderful, mostly ethereal, music set to haunting electric guitar and some of the best keyboard work I have heard from England recently. Fantastic vocals singing deep and emotional lyrics. I liked every song on the album. But my favorites were definitely: “Le Tartuffe Exemplaire”, (with its BBC radio effects). “Sunset Street”, with its great melody and upbeat rhythm. “Les Miradors”, with its excellent keyboards, and that excellent Gilmour-like guitar solo. “Schizophrénie Paranoïde”, for its powerful drum rhythm. The title track, “Au Cirque des âmes”, for its silent film era like opening with violin. The Duran Duran-like sax on “En Guidant les Hussards”.  “Liturgies Contemporaines”, for its Depeche Mode like keyboards, especially after losing Andrew Fletcher yesterday. The title track also has a lot of Pineapple Thief influence which is welcomed. The title is the album’s best song…always… right? (That is why it is usually picked as the album title, right?). “Dans La Couche du Diable”, with its wonderful piano and great vocals. Those guitar solos are very unforgettable as well. The closer, “Marasmes et Décadence”, with its haunting piano is another fantastic song that closes an album perfectly.

The album is sung in their native French. The keyboard and guitar work is exemplary. The backing and surrounding atmospherics, effects and added radio tracks are great.

Please give this music a chance. It is a wonderful diversion from what you are used to hearing. So much creativity and influence from the music of the 1980s. It will bring back memories, if you were alive back then.
