Splendid Renaissance at Union Chapel

Renaissance – Live at The Union Chapel (Symphonic Rock Records, 2016)

What a beautiful concert! Pioneering symphonic progressive rock band Renaissance videotaped this concert at the stunning Union Chapel in London in 2015. The group is still led by founder Annie Haslam. Her longtime collaborator Michael Dunford passed away in 2012 so Annie Haslam, who has been living in the United States for the past years, has put together a band of outstanding American jazz and session musicians.

Annie Haslam’s five octave vocals still sound particularly beautiful. She has one of the finest voices in progressive rock history. Her live band delivers an exquisite performance. The band features two extremely gifted keyboardists, Rave Tesar on piano and keyboards and Tom Brislin on symphonic keyboards, synths and samplers. Bassist Leo Traversa gets several opportunities to showcase his talent, offering stirring jazz-infused grooves. The band also features Mark Lambert on delightful acoustic guitars and backing vocals; and the creative drumming of Frank Pagano.

This concert features a mix of classic Renaissance fan-favorites along with newer material. It’s truly memorable musicianship. On the final piece, “Ashes Are Burning” the musicians perform a series of solos and improvisations including a knockout synth solo by Tom Brislin.

The DVD is available in NTSC all-region and compatible with PAL DVD players and televisions.

Live at The Union Chapel is a remarkable performance by one of the great masters of symphonic progressive rock. Annie Haslam has found a formidable band and I look forward to more recordings by this talented set of artists.

Jeff Beck Releases Live In Tokyo DVD

Jeff Beck - Live in Tokyo
Jeff Beck – Live in Tokyo

Live in Tokyo is the title of a new Jeff Beck DVD/Blue Ray. Jeff Beck is undeniably one of the world’s greatest guitar players. He is renowned for crossing musical boundaries, including rock, jazz, pop and blues.

Live In Tokyo was filmed at the Tokyo Dome City Hall in Japan on April 9th, 2014. These Japanese dates were the first to feature Jeff Beck s new backing band of Jonathan Joseph (drums), Nicolas Meier (guitars) and Rhonda Smith (bass) and the set list includes some pieces from his new, as yet unreleased, studio album.

In contrast to Beck’s previous visual releases, both filmed in small clubs, Live In Tokyo is filmed in a major concert arena and has a very different, more expansive feel.

The Who to Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Quadrophenia with ‘Quadrophenia: Live In London’ DVD

The Who - Quadrophenia: Live in London
The Who – Quadrophenia: Live in London
Legendary British rock band The Who will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of its iconic rock opera Quadrophenia (1973) with a DVD titled ‘Quadrophenia: Live in London’.

The Who took the music of Quadrophenia and embarked on the Quadrophenia and More Tour, performing their landmark album in its entirety. The critically acclaimed and highly successful tour closed at London’s Wembley Arena, with the cameras rolling, to record the closing night of this historic anniversary tour.

Filmed on July 8, 2013, Quadrophenia: Live In London features The Who in peak form, performing Quadrophenia from front to back, in its entirety, plus a special set of some of their all-time greatest hits. The film captures the band’s dynamic performance in front of their hometown crowd and features blistering performances of “The Real Me,” “The Punk And The Godfather,” “Doctor Jimmy” and a powerful performance of “Love Reign O’er Me.” With HD screen backdrops, archival footage and today’s advanced technology in sound, Quadrophenia: Live in London reunites The Who with bandmates John Entwistle, for “5:15,” and Keith Moon for his signature song “Bell Boy.” In addition to their performance of Quadrophenia, the band tear through classic tracks such as “Pinball Wizard,” “Who Are You,” “You Better You Bet,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “Tea & Theatre,” from their 2006 release Endless Wire.

Based around the story of Jimmy, Quadrophenia tells the tale of a young mod and his struggle to come of age in the mid-1960s. The project was intended to reflect the four characters of The Who and features some of Townshend’s most inspired, personal song-writing – way ahead of its time in scope and purpose – and is one of the most widely recognized albums of The Who’s career because of its classic depiction of mod culture, its renowned imagery and the magnificent music and powerful performances. Newly envisioned by Roger Daltrey, the concert film combines archival footage of The Who and images of historical events that have rocked Jimmy’s world over the past 40 years.

Quadrophenia: Live in London will be available in various configurations including an expanded 5-Disc Limited Collector’s Edition Metal Box which includes the High Definition Blu-Ray and standard DVD of the concert film, both in 5.1 Surround Sound audio; a two-CD soundtrack of the show; and for the first time, a 5.1 Surround Sound mix of the entire 1973 album release of Quadrophenia on a Blu-Ray Pure Audio. Extras include a 6” Mod Headlight sticker, a Mod Headlight button, and a 32-page book with liner notes and photos, all housed in a 10” metal container embossed with the movie-inspired, iconic, Mod bullseye logo painted on a Vespa SG scooter headlight.

Quadrophenia: Live in London will also be made available separately on High Definition Blu-Ray, standard DVD, and a downloadable Digital Concert Video, with the complete audio from the concert film being released as a two-CD soundtrack and a downloadable Digital Album. The 5.1 remix of the original Quadrophenia (1973) will be released as a single-disc Blu-Ray Pure Audio.
