Live RoSFest 2011 (Fingerwoven Records, 2012)

American progressive rock band Mars Hollow has just released a live album that captures their vitality and creativity outside of the recording studio. The highlights of this vibrant album recorded at performed at the Rites of Spring Festival in Gettysburg Pennsylvania in May of 2011 are the instrumental parts, specially the work by keyboardist Steve Mauk and John Baker’s guitar. The rest of the musicians are skilled instrumentalists as well.

The lineup includes John Baker on lead vocals and guitar; Jerry Beller on drums and backing vocals; Kerry Chicoine on bass and backing vocals; and Steve Mauk on keyboards and backing vocals.

Steve Mauk uses a wide range of keyboards, including piano, majestic organ and synths, creating captivating solos and atmopsheres. John Baker utilizes various guitar techniques throughout the live performance, demonstrating creativity and proficiency. Kerry Chicoine’s bass work is impressive with inspired bass lines throughout the album. Likewise, Jerry Beller’s drums are varied and imaginative.

The weaker side of the band is its vocals. While the instrumental sections sound like straightforward progressive rock, the vocal parts (and lyrics) are more simplistic and lean closer to classic rock.

The album includes a bonus studio track with a radio friendly focus.
