Sensational Cuban keyboardist Chucho Valdés will present Irakere 40 in North America. Performances include dates in New York City on November 10 and Durham, North Carolina on Monday, November 16.

Chucho Valdés is one of the most influential musicians in modern Afro-Cuban jazz. Valdés and his newly expanded Afro-Cuban Messengers will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his legendary group Irakere, an essential fusion band that combined Afro-Cuban ritual music, popular Afro-Cuban music, jazz and rock.

The Cuban artist will be presenting his new recording Tribute to Irakere – Live in Marciac on Jazz Village/Harmonia Mundi.

“Chucho Valdés is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians in Latin Jazz, and this concert will be a truly unique occasion,” says World Music Institute’s Artistic Director Par Neiburger. “He and his young group, the Afro-Cuban Messengers, will perform and reinterpret the groundbreaking music of his original group Irakere in honor of their 40th Anniversary. Irakere was one of the most important and influential groups in the history of Afro-Cuban jazz. It is always a treat to be able to see Chucho perform but this concert will be particularly special.”

Irakere’s recordings available: The best of Irakere, 1978 World Tour, Live at Ronnie Scott’s, Birmingham, Misa Negra, and Cuba Libre.
