Canterbury Delights on Paskinel Debut Album

Paskinel – Maraude Automnale (Vallis Lupi VL07, 2023)

Maraude Automnale is the debut album by Patrick “Paskinel” Dufour, one of the brains behind outstanding French band Alco Frisbass. In fact, Paskinel continues in a similar direction. Notably, on Maraude Automnale, you’ll find engaging and masterfully crafted electronic keyboards intertwined with superb guitar work and a fantastic rhythm section with Chris Squire-style bass.

As you would expect from one of the founders of Alco Frisbass, the music is deeply inspired by the keyboard-oriented sound of Hatfield and the North and National Health. Indeed, this is Canterbury-style progressive rock at its best.

On this occasion, Patrick Paskinel Dufour is joined by Frédéric Tourneriff Chaput (Alco Frisbass). Guests include Fabrice Chouette (the other cofounder of Alco Frisbass) on organ; Jacques Bon on bass; DAG-Z on flute; Franck Dehaut on electric guitar, lapsteel (from tribute band And You And Yes); Mickael Fellmann on saxophone; and Jun Gui Kwon on violin.

This album is a deeply satisfying example of the jazzier side of progressive rock, fueled by a wide range of mesmerizing keyboards.
