Pymlico Ventures Deeper into Crossover Jazz

Pymlico – On This Day (Apollon Records, 2020)

On This Way is the sixth album from instrumental rock band Pymlico. The Norwegian band is known for combining progressive rock, fusion, smooth jazz, funk jazz, and other styles. Although the band uses electric guitars and keyboards, saxophones and trumpet are playing a bigger role. In fact, I detect barely any progressive rock. The band has visibly drifted towards easy listening jazz especially with the widespread use of the smooth jazz saxophone.

Highlights include ‘Jump Start,’ a funk jazz track where Pymlico uses memorable trumpet work by Vegard Sandbukt and fusion guitar; and ‘Sidemen Inc,’ which is more electric and has an edgy Snarky Puppy fusion vibe.

The lineup includes Øyvind Brøter on keyboards; Stephan Hvinden on guitars; Andreas Sjo Engen on guitars; Arild Brøter on drums and keyboards; Oda Rydning on percussion;  and Robin Havem Løvøy on saxophones.
