Ambient Electronica Master Robert Rich Releases Medicine Box

Robert Rich - Medicine Box
Robert Rich, one of the leading musicians in the area of ambient electronica, has a new CD titled Medicine Box. The album includes great artwork from John Bergin, in bright 3-fold Digipack.

Medicine Box features Cheri Chuang’s wordless crystalline voice on three songs, with traces of Persian inflection. There are deep basslines that hint at dub, while analog synth skitters and chuffs the outlines of a rhythmic grid, propelled forward by pulsing north African drums.

Sustaining guitars bring a psychedelic edge. Cello and reeds echo plaintively in the distance. Rich’s sparse piano adds droplets of modal jazz to this dark tea.

Frontman Nick D’Virgilio Departs from Progressive Rock Band Spock’s Beard

Nick D’Virgilio
Vocalist and drummer Nick D’Virgilio announced his departure from renowned progressive rock band Spock’s Beard. “We regret that Nick D’Virgilio, a founding member of the band, good friend and incredible talent is unable to continue with us due to his other commitments,” said a press release in the band’s official web site. “Please continue to support him, check out his new solo CD “Pieces,” go see him with Cirque du Soleil and follow whatever other madness he’s up to.

As you may or may not know, for almost 2 years now I have been working for Cirque Du Soleil on the touring show TOTEM,” said D’Virgilio on his web site. “Traveling a bit of the globe with my family on an adventure that has been great, but also very tough. Great because I am finally able to fully support my family with this very unstable life I chose as a musician, but also very tough because this job has made it hard to do other things and the main thing is Spock’s Beard…I have had the best time and have made some of the best music of my career with Dave, Al, Ryo, and Neal and will take those memories with me for the rest of my life.”

Spock’s Beard has recruited vocalist and guitarist Ted Leonard (Enchant, Thought Chamber) and Jimmy Keegan (Santana, John Waite), who’s been the band’s tour drummer for close to 10 years.

A new Spock’s Beard DVD and extensive European tour will take place in early 2012, followed by the band’s 11th studio release sometime in the summer.

Fusion Legends Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke & Lenny White Win 2011 Latin Grammy

Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White - Forever
The two-CD set Forever (Concord Jazz) by jazz fusion legends Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke & Lenny White won the Best Instrumental Album at this year’s Latin Grammy Awards.

Keyboardist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Lenny White formed the core of the classic, most popular and successful lineup of Return to Forever, the legendary influential electric jazz fusion band. After reclaiming the jazz-rock world in 2008 with the triumphant return of Return to Forever, Corea, Clarke and White decided to revisit where it all began, to get back to basics and the soul of their relationship.

Forever was recorded live. Disc one of Forever is a best-of sampler from Corea, Clarke and White’s “RTF-Unplugged” world tour in 2009. Highlights include jazz standards “On Green Dolphin Street,” “Waltz for Debby” and “Hackensack,” Corea-classics “Bud Powell” and “Windows,” Clarke’s new “La Canción de Sofia” and even RTF pieces “Señor Mouse” and “No Mystery.” Disc two is a bonus CD with its own story.
The sets we played were basically jam sessions of the standards we knew from the songbooks of Monk, Bill Evans, Miles and others,” says Corea. “Also included are some pieces from the Return to Forever songbook reworked in this acoustic setting.”

This acoustic trio had not been documented up to this point,” explains White, an innovative and versatile drummer/producer/composer. “It was important to document this because that’s how we started. On the last day of our Keystone Korner gig in 1973 in San Francisco, we had two guitarists sit in, and it became electric. But we come from playing in the jazz tradition. RTF had a real jazz rhythm section, and I think that’s what distinguishes RTF from all the other groups.”

Emerson, Lake & Palmer “40th Anniversary Reunion Concert” Released on DVD and Blu-ray

Emerson Lake & Palmer - 40th Anniversary Reunion Concert
Legendary progressive rock band Emerson Lake & Palmer (ELP) reformed for the first time since 1998 for their final show to headline the High Voltage Festival in London on Sunday, July 25th 2010.
