Rousing Array of Sounds from Chasing The Monsoon

Chasing The Monsoon – No Ordinary World (Immrama Records, 2019)

Chasing The Monsoon is a superb crossover project that brings together an exciting mix of musical genres, including superbly constructed progressive rock, mesmerizing and dreamy ambient electronic atmospheres, edgy trip hop, evocative Celtic sounds and a rich palette of world music rhythms and chants. The project’s name is based on a book of the same name written by Alexander Frater.

The project was envisioned by Karnataka’s multi-instrumentalist Ian Jones and producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Steve Evans. No Ordinary World features a mix of exquisite, poetic lead male vocals and Enya-style ethereal female vocals and captivating chorus chanting.

Influences include Pink Floyd, Karnataka, Jon Anderson, One Giant Leap, British progressive rock band Solstice, and Deep Forest.

The lineup includes Ian Jones on bass, keyboards, guitars, programming; Steve Evans on keyboards, vocals, drums, programming; Ian Simmons on electric and acoustic guitars; Karnataka’s Lisa Fury on vocals. Guests include Nightwish’s Troy Donockley on flute, whistles and uilleann pipe; and Enrico Pinna on guitar.

No Ordinary World is masterfully recorded and orchestrated, a finely crafted progressive music crossover album with beautiful artwork.

Oddly peaceful Méséglise

Méséglise – Stranamente Sereno (Lizard Records, 2016)

Méséglise is an alternative music project led by Paolo Nannetti and Marco Giovannini, two members of Italian progressive rock group Sithonia. On Stranamente Sereno (Oddly peaceful) you’ll find a mix of classic Italian progressive rock, traditional folk music and pop.

Songwriting plays an essential role in the music of Méséglise. Paolo Nannetti’s lyrics are deeply influenced by poetic Italian singer-songwriters.

I gravitated towards the songs with deeper progressive and folk roots versus the pop-leaning ones. Nannetti and Giovannini are joined by three additional band members, the rhythm section of Maya Seagull and Maurizio Lettera and the exquisite violin and mandolin work of Maria Robaey.

Definite keepers include the first two tracks, ‘Il Tempo di Un Caffe’ (The time for a coffee) and ‘La Strada Verso la Collina’ (The road to the hill); the folk-oriented, accordion-driven ‘Caporale Milt’ (Corporal Milt); the prog rock conclusion of’ Interno Notte’ (Internal Night); the classical-influenced ‘Confusi In Mezzo Ai Simboli’ (Confused among the symbols); and the last two instrumentals, the folk-rock piece ‘Il Gioco Delle Parti’ (The game of the parts) and the instrumental version of track 2, ‘La Strada Verso la Collina.’

The lineup on Stranamente Sereno includes Paolo Nannetti on keyboards, organ, guitars, accordion, and vocals; Marco Giovannini on vocals and acoustic guitars; Maurizio Lettera on drums, percussion; Maya Seagull on bass, vocals; and Maria Robaey on violin, mandolin. Guests featured: Alberto Celommi on acoustic guitar and Enrico Capalbo on ebow guitar.

The CD booklet includes lyrics and excellent cover and interior illustration artwork by Paola Baiesi.

The album is available from various Italian retailers, including http://www.btf.it and https://www.amazon.it

Lighthouse (Kscope) is the title of the new album from Russian progressive duo iamthemorning, scheduled for release on April 1. Lighthouse is the follow up to the band’s 2014 album Belighted. The iamthemorning includes Marjana Semkina on vocals and Gleb Kolyadin on grand piano and keyboards.

Lighthouse includes guest musicians Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson) on drums, Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) on bass and additional vocals on the album’s title track by Mariusz Duda (Lunatic Soul, Riverside).

Lighthouse features classical music, Canterbury-style progressive rock, northern folk, jazz and electronic influences. Featuring a story of the progression of mental illness, the album takes the listener through the stages with the story’s central character, her attempts to fight it, and temporal remission leading to a final breakdown. Lyrically, the works and lives of Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath inspire the album.
