One of the most captivating progressive rock albums that have come across our desk is Herd of Instinct, the self-titled debut album by Texas-based progressive rock band Herd of Instinct. This is a case where the definition progressive rock is truly accurate. The talented band members treat the listener to a wonderful mix of primarily instrumental vibrant progressive rock with complex time signatures, inspired by King Crimson and psychedelia; together with avant-garde, ambient electronica and even world music elements.
There is a close connection with fellow American progressive rock band Djam Karet. Herd of Instinct came out on Djam Karet’s new independent label called Firepool Records.
The skilled band members include Jason Spradlin on drums and marimba, Mike Davison on guitar and guitar synth; and Mark Cook on Warr guitar, synthesizers, other guitars and ebow. Guests include Dave Streett on Warr guitar, Bob Fisher on flute, Gayle Ellett on mellotron, Martin McCall on percussion; Kris Swenson on vocals; Pat Mastelotto on drums; Gavin Harrison on drums; and Markus Reuter on guitars and loops.
There is a lot to discover in Herd of Instinct. The more you listen to it, the better it gets. With is fresh and innovative sound, it is definitely one of the most exciting American bands in recent years.
