The Promise (Universal, 1996)
This is a terrific sampling of guitarist John McLaughlin’s wide range of collaborations. It includes the jam ‘Django’ with Jeff Beck, ‘Jazz Jungle’ with Mike Brecker on the sax, the Shakti-like piece ‘The Wish’ with Zakir Hussain and Trilok Gurtu, and a fusion piece called ‘Shin Jin Rui’ with Dave Sanborn on alto sax.
The other tracks we recommend on this CD are ‘No Return’ and ‘El Ciego.’ In sum, a must-have album for guitar fans. Among his other albums, we would also recommend the collaboration ‘The Guitar Trio.’ If you prefer McLaughlin’s rapid-fire guitar antics, check out the Mahavishnu Orchestra albums.
