Nik Turner
Space Gypsy (Purple Pyramid, 2013)
Hawkwind fans will surely enjoy Space Gypsy, the latest solo album by Hawkwind founder, saxophonist and vocalist Nik Turner. Turner represents the grittier side of space rock. The new album has some fast paced punk rock elements that make it different from other space rock bands. The best moments, however, are when the trippy guitars, violin and keyboards direct the music into a solid space rock realm.
Space Gypsy features special guest appearances by fellow Hawkwind musician Simon House (violin), Gong’s Steve Hillage (guitar), together with Nicky Garratt of the UK Subs, Jurgen Engler of German industrial band Die Krupps, and Jeff Piccinini of 1970s punk band Chelsea.
Highlights include the sensational interweaving guitars, distant vocals, retro keyboards and sax of ‘Time Crypt’; the dreamy slow tempo ‘Galaxy Rise’; and the exquisite psychedelic violin in ‘Coming of the Maya’ .
Nik Turner was a founding member of Hawkwind during the band’s most successful phase, from 1970 to 1976. He wrote or co-wrote some of the group’s most popular songs such as “Brainstorm” and “Master of the Universe”.
Space Gypsy is available in three different formats: a regular CD packaged in a digipak with stunning original artwork; a limited edition gatefold vinyl with bonus etched 7-inch single; and a special limited edition deluxe box version of ‘Space Gypsy’, which includes a bonus CD of rough mixes and instrumental versions that feature additional flute and saxophone improvisations from Nik not included on the album. Also included are 4 postcards, a full color patch and collectible pin.
