Prism (Dare2 DR2-007, 2013)
Renowned bassist Dave Holland and his three outstanding colleagues Kevin Eubanks, Craig Taborn, and Eric Harland have recorded one of the finest fusion albums of 2013. Prism presents a wonderful mix of jazz, blues and rock elements with original pieces composed by the four skilled instrumentalists.
The album opens with the vibrant jazz-rock and funk beats of “The Watcher” (Eubanks) Next comes “The Empty Chair” (Holland), a great blues with superb slide guitar solos by Eubanks and exquisite bass by Holland.
“Spirals” (Taborn ) showcases the talent of piano player Craig Taborn in a composition that features fiery jazz-rock improvisations as well as experimental moments.
“Choir” ((Eric Harland) takes the band into straight-ahead jazz improvisation, with splendid interaction between the four musicians.
Kevin Eubanks’ guitar in “The Color of Iris” is bluesy and gracefully elegant, while Holland’s bass provides another fabulous intimate solo.
“A New Day” (Holland) and “The True Meaning of Determination” bring back the full ensemble state of the art fusion. They are followed by another tasty guitar piece by Eubanks, with his fantastic soulful blues style.
The album ends with the meditative “Breathe” (Harland) which is a satisfying calming conclusion to the album.
