Gary Windo
Steam Radio Tapes (Gonzo Multimedia, 2014)
Gonzo Multimedia continues to unearth ‘lost recordings’ by musicians who deserve a little more attention. This time it’s British saxophonist Gary Windo. His name may not be familiar, but you’ve probably heard his sax in various recordings.
Gary Windo was pretty active in the 1970s Canterbury progressive rock scene. He worked with the legendary Robert Wyatt on the albums Rock Bottom (1974) and Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard (1975), and with Hugh Hopper on 1984 (1973) and Hoppertunity Box (1976).
Despite his Canterbury pedigree, you won’t mind much progressive rock in Steam Radio Tapes. The album was recorded in 1976 and 1977 at Pink Floyd’s Britannia Row studios with Nick Mason working as producer and drummer for some tracks. The cuts include funk, rock and roll and jazz jamming.
