Steve Khan
Subtext (Tone Center, 2014)
On his latest album titled Subtext, American guitarist Steve Khan shows his passion for Latin American music by using a formidable percussion section. Throughout Subtext, Khan delivers a series of outstanding performances where his enthralling guitar engages with the rhythm section creating exciting arrangements.
Even though a large majority of the percussive work comes from the Afro-Cuban tradition, Khan treats the listener to a fabulous collaboration with Uruguayan vocalist Mariana Ingold, where Colombian beats play the leading role. ‘Cada gota de mar’ is a cumbia-fueled vallenato with Spanish language vocals conveyed in a charming Uruguayan accent. It’s one of the highlights of the album.
The impressive lineup on Subtext includes Steve Khan on guitar; Rubén Rodríguez on electric bass and baby bass; Bobby Allende on congas and bongos; Marc Quiñones on timbal and percussion; Dennis Chambers on drums; and guest artists Rob Mounsey on keyboards; Randy Brecker on flügelhorn; Gil Goldstein on accordion; and Mariana Ingold on vocals.
Subtext is another superb Latin Jazz-infused album by Steve Khan, one of the most creative guitarists in the American jazz scene.
