Florencia Gonzalez
Between Loves (Zoho Records ZM201404, 2014)
When you think of Latin jazz you normally think of a combination of jazz and Cuban or Puerto Rican influences. Saxophonist Florencia Gonzalez also makes Latin jazz but in this case the inspiration comes from her native Uruguay, ad Argentina as well, in the form of candombe, zamba, chacarera and tango.
Florencia is currently living in the United States, where she is developing her musical career and absorbing new musical influences. Between Loves has a strong emphasis on brass, features a multinational lineup, including Florencia Gonzalez on tenor sax; Jonathan Powell on trumpet; flugelhorn; Shannon Barnett on trombone; Luis Perdomo on piano; Fernando Huergo on bass; and Franco Pinna on drums.
“The title subject “Between Loves” of this CD is still a current theme in my music and my life, which is always an issue for a person with an immigration background like myself – in my case, from Uruguay to New York,” says Florencia Gonzalez.
Between Loves is a gracefully elegant album that presents an intriguing South American variety of Latin Jazz.
