Orne
The Tree of Life (Black Widow Records BWRCD 134, 2011)
With Halloween around the corner, it’s time to focus on the some of the darker bands in progressive rock. Orne is a slow-paced Finnish band recording for the ultimate label in horror and doom prog, Italy’s Black Widow Records.
Orne draws primarily from 1970’s progressive rock, using primarily electric organ, guitars and gloomy vocals. You’ll find echoes of Van Der Graaf Generator, early Genesis, Pink Floyd, Finnish band Wigwam, electric blues and an occasional incursion into hard rock. Thematically, you’ll encounter mysterious stories of sorcery, torment, death, and melancholy.
The band includes Sami Albert Hynninen on vocals; Kimi Kärki on electric and acoustic guitars, Mellotron; Pirkka Leino on Hammond, Rhodes piano; Timo Oksanen on flutes; Jaakko Pentinen on bass; Pekka Pitkälä on electric guitars; Jari Pohjonen on drums, percussion; Lea Tommola on saxophone; and Patrick Walker provides the spoken word intro.
Orne takes you to the darker side of the imagination with a fine performance of classic and gloomy progressive rock.
