Scandinavian progressive rock musicians Ketil Vestrum Einarsen (Jaga Jazzist, Motorpsycho), Rhys Marsh (The Autumn Ghost, Opium Cartel) and Mattias Olsson (Änglagård, White Willow) got together to form a project called Kaukasus. Their debut album is titled Kaukasus ‘I’ (Autumsongs Records).
The group started as an experiment into Krautrock music and morphed into a dark, contemporary Nordic progressive rock album, with krautrock, art rock and world music elements.
Kaukasus view themselves as a musical tripod, where the three musicians’ ideas and styles meet. Olsson provides dynamic drumming and Mellotron textures, Marsh adds impassioned vocals and guitar work, while Einarsen generates evocative woodwind and synthesizer lines.
The album was written and recorded in a short amount of time, only two weeks. “I haven´t had this much fun in years,” says Einarsen. “I loved working with Mattias and Rhys, and playing with them just felt right. I found myself sending them my stuff, only to get back something very unexpected, unpredictable and wonderful.”
Olsson reiterates this feeling: “When it comes to long distance recordings it’s always a matter of trust. With Kaukasus I think we have found a great balance between form and chaos.”
Marsh adds “In many respects, this is the album that I’ve always wanted to make. It was fast and impulsive, and has an energy that couldn’t have been contrived. I was constantly surprised by the parts that Ketil and Mattias would send me”.
