Salim Ghazi Saeedi
Human Encounter (Salim, 2011)
Iranian multi-instrumentalist Salim Ghazi Saeedi delivers an album of instrumental vignettes within the context of the Rock In Opposition (RIO) branch of progressive rock. The pieces include odd time signatures, jazz improvisation and experimentation. It’s the exploratory and avant-garde side of progressive rock.
The album is split into two parts. The “dark side” manifests the ugly experiences in the artist’s encounters with other human beings. The concept is that humans are the main source of terror, pain and destruction on Earth.
The “bright side” reflects the pleasures Salim Ghazi Saeedi encountered in this planet.
Many of the pieces have a dark or bright side dedication. On the dark side, “Sadistic Teacher” is dedicated to Mohammad Reza S., Salim’s 4th grade teacher. “City Bombardment” is dedicated to the 1980 Iran-Iraq war bombs. “You Many One Devils” is dedicated to rulers of past, present and future.
The bright side dedications are “For Eugene, Distilling the Delicacy,” dedicated to Eugene de Blaas (1843-1931); “For Ali, Who Does Live Many Births Mercifully” which is dedicated to Ali Moini (1975-); “For Kurt, The King Without Crown” dedicated to grunge rock pioneer Kurt Cobain (1967-1994). “For Thelonious, and His 88 Holy Names” is dedicated to Thelonious Monk (1917-1982). “For Jeremy, Embodying the Mastermind” is dedicated to Jeremy Brett (1933-1995).
