Renaissance
Academy of Music 1974 (Purple Pyramid/Cleopatra Records, 2015)
This double live album was originally recorded in 1974. Symphonic progressive rock band Renaissance was becoming better known and put together a memorable concert at the Academy of Music in New York. An unauthorized version of this recording was distributed in bootleg circles some time ago. Now it appears as an official release with the artists actually getting compensated for their work.
Academy of Music 1974 was a special concert. It featured Renaissance together with a 24-piece symphony orchestra conducted by Howard Stein. Although part of the classic 1970s progressive rock family, Renaissance used few synthesizers and electric guitar solos. The group’s sound mixed English folk, rock and classical music. You can hear progressive rock-style electric bass and drums along with the folk-rock guitar of the late Michael Dunford and the fabulous voice of lead vocalist Annie Haslam.
Most of the material on this recording comes from Renaissance’s albums Ashes Are Burning and their (at the time) upcoming Turn of The Cards, including many fan favorites and future classics.
The quality of the recording is quite good although you occasionally hear some instrument feedback, audience chatter and other distractions.
The lineup on Academy of Music 1974 includes Annie Haslam on vocals, Michael Dunford on guitar, Jon Camp on bass, John Tout on keyboards and Terence Sullivan on drums. Wishbone Ash guitarist appears as special guest, delivering an excellent solo on Ashes Are Burning. Howard Stein appears on piano and conducting the orchestra.
