John Wetton
The Studio Recordings – Anthology (Cherry Red Records, 2015)
For the progressive rock community, John Wetton is a legendary character, a former member of essential bands king Crimson and UK. For the pop music fan Wetton is best known as the lead singer for radio friendly AOR band Asia. This Anthology contains material from his six solo albums.
You won’t find much progressive rock here. In fact, it’s practically non-existent. There is an opening instrumental titled the circle of St. Giles and ‘Arkangel,’ where robert Fripp appears a guest. The rest of this two-CD collection is pop and AOR songs. Sure, you’ll find some fine guest musicians who used to perform (or still do) progressive rock, but in this context, it’s just basic pop songs, so if you like Asia, you’ll certainly enjoy this set.
