Rick Wakeman – The Red Planet (R&D Media/Madfish Music, 2020)
Keyboard maestro Rick Wakeman returns to the roots that made him famous: keyboard-fueled progressive rock. The Red Planet brings back the beloved arsenal of keyboards that won Wakeman so many fans. He plays majestic cathedral-style organ, mesmerizing synthesizer and electric organ solos and magnificent mellotron-sounding orchestral arrangements.
The Red Planet is an all instrumental effort although Wakeman uses the finely-crafted mellotron choral sounds as well. The group on this album is Wakeman’s backing band, The English Rock Ensemble. The three musicians provide a solid rhythm section that includes creative bass lines similar in style to Chris Squire’s best works as well notable guitar work.
The lineup includes Rick Wakeman on keyboards; Dave Colquhoun on guitars; Lee Pomeroy on bass; and Ash Soan on drums.
The Red Planet features masterfully-crafted progressive symphonic rock by one of the keyboard legends of our time.
