Jordsjø – Pastoralia (Karisma Records, 2021)
Norwegian band Jordsjø continues to delight with its fantastic progressive rock style. The Oslo band’s sound has that distinctive, mesmerizing Nordic sound, featuring captivating Mellotron passages, exquisite acoustic and electric guitars, beautiful Änglagård-style flutes, traditional folk influences and charming Norwegian vocals.
Although Jordsjø still performs beautifully orchestrated state of the art symphonic progressive rock, “Pastoralia” features more jazz influences, elegantly intertwining acoustic and electric instruments.
The digital promo didn’t provide specific album credits in terms of instrumentation, but the album includes Jordsjø members: multi-instrumentalist Håkon Oftung; and drummer Kristian Frøland along with guest musicians: Ola Mile Bruland (Actionfredag), Håkon Knutzen, Vilde Mortensen Storesund, Mats Lemjan, Christian Meaas Svendsen and Åsa Ree (MEER, Tusmørke, Wobbler).
“Pastoralia” is a deeply satisfying progressive rock album by one of the finest acts in northern Europe. Undoubtedly, one of the best releases of the year.
Previous recordings are all high recommended as well, including Nattfiolen, Jordsjø, and Jord.
