Beledo – Seriously Deep (Moonjune, 2021)

Seriously Deep is the new album from extraordinary Uruguayan musician Beledo. On this new recording, Beledo displays his talent as a multi-instrumentalist. Although he is well known as a fantastic guitarist, with a note bending style similar to Allan Holdsworth, Beledo is also an outstanding pianist.

On Seriously Deep, Beledo treats the listener to exquisite interplay between the soaring electric guitar and the piano thanks to studio overdubs.  The rhythm section could not be better. Beledo invited bass virtuoso Tony Levin and drummer Kenny Grohowski. Together, they perform superb structured and improvised music with engaging, fluid arrangements.

One of the highlights of the album is Beledo’s recreation of Eberhard Weber’s composition, Seriously Deep. The musical piece initially appeared on Weber’s Silent Feet (ECM Records) album. That specific track had a huge effect on Beledo and his friend Jorge Camiruaga when they first listened to it in 1978.

Seriously Deep includes instrumentals and songs with vocals. Guest singers include Botswanan vocalist Kearoma Rantao and Italian artist Boris Savoldelli who delivers wordless singing that evokes the Canterbury style of jazz-infused progressive rock.

The lineup includes Beledo on guitars, acoustic piano and synth; Tony Levin on upright bass, bass guitar; and Kenny Grohowski on drums. Special guests: Jorge Camiruaga on vibraphone; Kearoma Rantao on vocals; and Boris Savoldelli on vocals.
