Mercury X is a progressive metal band from Sweden. Mercury X originally formed in 2013, in Norrtälje, Sweden. The band was formed of members: Martin Björklund, guitarist/lead vocalist/violinist; bassist Alfonso Flores; guitarist Jonas Vedin; and drummer/lead vocalist Denis Diaz. They have two other album releases: That’s Blasphemy, (2014), and Between Worlds, (2017).
The band sounds a little like Italy’s Kingcrow, which is definitely a great thing. I am looking forward to their next album. While I and other Kingcrow fans are waiting, Imprisoned, will keep that heavy prog need satisfied.
The title, Imprisoned, epitomizes the feeling that the band had with being locked away during the making of the EP. But it also can be a summary of what the world has had to deal with during this seemingly never-ending pandemic. Great music to keep your mind off of that experience, here.
Every song on Imprisoned is a winner, but the opener, “Until the Break of Day” really kicks this celebration off well. Power electric guitar chords, heavy bass and blasting drums make this a crowd pleaser and great concert opener. It opens with slamming drums, cool keys and power electric guitar chords. The vibe is very early Kingcrow. Even Denis Diaz’ vocals sound similar to Diego Marchesi. That “wave of sound” they hit you with on the beginning and refrain of this song reminds me so much of early Kingcrow. Those bouncing electric guitar chords are pure early Kingcrow. “Someone is waiting for me”…indeed. Off to a great start.
Galloping drums greet the opening of “The Light in Your Eyes”. This is a poppy song, but still full of heavy guitars and drums. The keyboards at the midpoint are a wonderful break, as is the guitar solo that follows. “Open up your mind to see. And we can change our destinies!” For sure.
“Lonely”, is full of gut-churning drumming, the kinds of which we have been missing since Tool’s Fear Inoculum or Dream Theater’s “Pull Me Under”. A very heavy and powerful lyric and sound.
“Imprisoned”, is an epic, over 20-minute symphony of metal. It opens with choir-like vocals, followed closely by heavy drums, spacey synth keys, and powerful metal guitars. Every twist and turn of this metal soundscape masterpiece is golden. All your metal highlights from the past, return to life. Enjoy.
“The Sound of Nothing”, well that is NoSound; but we already have a wonderful band that plays that music in Italy. This opens with soft, icy, piano-like keyboards and a symphonic background, before the heavy drums and guitars return.
This is now one of my favorite albums of early 2022. Another great new band to follow and enjoy. Get this and listen to it to death. Every key, drum punch and chord is wonderful. No fillers here, just pure metal crunch!
