One of my favorite new artists of 2019, was Mimesis, with their debut album. The debut featured five tracks, with the first and best single track, “CTRLALTDEL”. It was made into a cool video game like music video, which feature lead singer Jen Janet as a heroine, who saves the band and “crew” from the enemy. It had a wonderful Tron meets 2001 a Space Odyssey, technology gone wrong, concept to it.
Now, Mimesis returns, on May 13, 2022, with their follow-up EP, Trilogy. The EP is built around the concept of a utopian city of Mimesis, with all the positive and negative effects a “utopian” city might possess.
Trilogy is full of more melodic, progressive metal, and has metalcore and math rock features. The band has changed a little. Jen Janet, is the lead vocalist; Dr. Gore, plays all lead guitars, and generates the orchestration; Kilian Duarte, returns on bass guitar; and James Knoerl, plays drums.
This is a shorter EP than the debut, but it is full of some great music. “The Traveler”, opens with full on cinematic orchestration, that will make you feel like you are sitting in a theater of tomorrow, watching a space ship circle a planet or fly over the beauty of the city of Mimesis. Deep, beautiful orchestration, before Jen sings, “What’s the worst thing you’ve ever seen? Oh, to be a fly on the wall. To see what you had to be. The serious refugee”. Later. “How was I supposed to know? The future. The screams of the sick. The village took down brick by brick”. Yes, the stage and story are set. A beautiful dream city, deteriorates. “What’s the most beautiful thing you have seen, Mimesis”. Almost like a trip back to Genesis’ “Trick of the Tail” with its cities of gold. Jen sings, “I promise to show you all that is beautiful”. Off to a wonderful start.
“The Artist”, continues the journey, only this time with some very original lead electric guitar soloing. Jen sings, “This is not the world you know”. The deep, dark, keyboards, orchestration, bass and drumming is forbidding. Jen describes the dark underworld, intensive labor and horror that makes the “beautiful” city shine so brightly, and display its green splendor. The instrumental sequence that follows is spectacular.
“The Captain”, closes the EP, with the decay of he city. Jen sings, “You control everything around you. Control freak. Don’t speak. Unless spoken to! I will bring you to your knees. If it’s the very last thing I do!” Yes, a great short story, full of action and great music. Jen sings, “It’s time to go home!”
This is a great follow-up, and proof that this band is ready now for a full-length counterpart to this EP, examining the story in more depth. Maybe a concept about the planet, Mimesis resides on. I like this band and look forward to the next chapter. I hope to interview the band and discuss more of the story. This album is a keeper. Please check it out in May.
There is a video for “The Captain”, that must be seen. It will be released in May. I will add it to this post then.
