The John Irvine Band – Psychopomp (John Irvine, 2022)
Multi-instrumentalist and composer John Irvine is back with yet another fantastic instrumental album. Irvine delivers a deeply satisfying set of instrumental works where dazzling Sci-Fi inspired jazz-rock fusion meets delightfully constructed progressive rock. Notably, the band is in reality Irvine on guitars, bass and keyboards plus drummer Calum McIntyre.
Although Irvine excels as a guitarist who uses a wide range of captivating sounds, his role as a keyboardist is consistently excellent as well, skillfully delivering synth solos and finely crafted keyboard arrangements and electronics.
Despite the fact that Irvine’s high energy progressive fusion sounds fresh and modern, there are visible connections to the pioneers of British fusion like Alan Holdsworth, Bill Brufford and the Canterbury bands.
