EBB – Mad & Killing Time (Boudicca Records, 2022)
Mad & Killing Time is the debut album of EBB, one of the most fascinating new acts in the British progressive rock scene. The Scotland-based group is part of an arts collective, and they use progressive rock as a form of expression. Notably, EBB includes 5 women and 1 man, who write and play their own material.
Stylistically, the band skillfully incorporates elements of various strains of progressive rock such as symphonic rock, neoprog and space rock intertwined with classic rock, soulful vocals, bits of jazz, insightful folk-rock, and fascinating spoken word.
The band uses up to three vocalists, who hook you in immediately. However, this is a band that also enjoys developing instrumental passages exemplified by creative bass lines, a wide range of keyboard sounds (including majestic Mellotron sounds, synths and organ), epic guitars, a brilliant use of Pink Floyd-style spoken word, and even an enlightened use of the vocoder.
The “Mad & Killing Time” physical version includes an inviting 48-page book with plenty of band photos, lyrics and credits.
Personnel: Kitty Biscuits on backing vocals, percussion, spoken word poetry; Anna Fraser on drums, percussion; Bad Dog on bass; Suna Dasi on backing vocals, synthesizer; Erin Bennett on guitars, lead vocals, trumpet; and Nikki Francis on Hammond organ, piano, synthesizers, saxophone, flute, clarinet.
