Single Celled Organism Returns to Progressive Rock Roots

Single Celled Organism – Event Horizon (2023)

Hamburg-based artist Jens Lueck, known for his thrilling solo project Single Celled Organism, is a versatile musician and producer. Single Celled Organism moniker reflects Lueck’s complete control over the entire creative process, from songwriting to recording, mixing, except some guitar solos. Indeed, Single Celled Organism delivers high quality symphonic progressive rock that is masterfully crafted. You’ll find superb, dreamlike atmospheres, psychedelic influences, engaging vocals, excellent electric guitar and synth lines, delightful acoustic guitar work, epic progressions, and an overall great balance between musicianship and songwriting. Although I like most of the band’s material on “Event Horizon,” there are some heavy metal guitar riffs at times that seem out of place.

Lueck’s first recording, “Splinter In The Eye,” launched in 2017 as a concept album set in a dystopian world, a story which continued on his second work, “Percipio Ergo Sum.” The third album, Event Horizon, which debuted on March 3, 2023, carries on with the narrative.

“Event Horizon” follows the story of Tella, a former “TV girl” who escaped the state-controlled zone to live in a self-organized community. Tella develops a close relationship with a hacker in the community and expresses a desire to meet the person responsible for her liberation, Barnaby. During the encounter, Barnaby reveals that he is not only responsible for the experiment performed on Tella, but also her biological father. This confession shatters Tella’s psychological stability, and she struggles to come to terms with her emotions and hatred towards Barnaby.

Jens Lueck was immersed in music from a young age, thanks to his grandmother, who played classical music to him regularly. He started classical piano lessons at seven and became a devoted fan of Johann Sebastian Bach. As he grew older, he discovered a variety of genres including pop, jazz, and rock. Bands like Pink Floyd and Genesis inspired him to start his own band.

Later, Lueck learned to play drums and bass and experimented with songwriting using cassette recorders. He moved to Hamburg after graduation to study audio engineering and focused entirely on music. He recorded music for other artists and built up his own studio, where he continues to produce his own projects and work with other artists. Lueck has worked with a variety of artists including Sylvan, Ricochet, and Lidia Kopania. Single Celled Organism is a return to his roots in Progressive/Art Rock.
