thisOneness – Surprize: The Story Of thisOneness (2023)
“Surprize: The Story Of thisOneness” is indeed an unexpected and deeply satisfying 3-CD set by a superb band you may have never heard of. Minnesota’s thisOneness was an outstanding progressive rock/fusion band that, despite their short-lived existence from 1974-1976, attracted the attention of record collectors for years.
Their one and only 1975 album, “Surprize,” is a rare gem that presents the band’s musical evolution from rock to jazz fusion. The combination of flute with vocals, makes this album stand out from other jazz-rock offerings. However, it is the band’s ingenious fusion of Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever influences that really set them apart.
For over a decade, collectors eagerly sought a reissue of “Surprize,” but unfortunately, the master tapes were lost. That is until 2022 when keyboardist Gregg Inhoffer came forward with not only the master tapes but also enough unreleased material to fill two more CDs. The resulting three CD set, “Amalgamated Funk” and “Sonic Geometry” included, is a true treasure trove for jazz fusion enthusiasts.
“Surprize: The Story Of thisOneness” delivers a unique and refreshing fusion of rock and jazz, where progressive music fans will find elements of Zeuhl band Zao, Happy The Man, Weather Report, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, to name just a few.
The story of thisOneness is unforeseen, including their time as the backing band for pop icon Olivia Newton-John. The booklet provides all the details of their journey to explore and create new music before disbanding to pursue other musical ventures.
You may have to buy the album from progressive rock specialists such as Wayside Music, Laser’s Edge, etc.
