Estructura - Estructura

Estructura, Venezuelan Keyboard-Fueled Symphonic Rock Pioneers

Estructura – Estructura (PQR-Disques, 2023 reissue, originally released in 1980)

This album is a 2023 reissue of Estructura’s self-tiled album, released in 1980, part of ProgVenezuela series. Estructura was one of the finest Venezuelan progressive rock groups in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Although Estructura was influenced by the great pioneers of the 1970, the group was also known for its keyboard work deeply inspired by classical music and its delightful Spanish poetic vocals that gave the songs a fascinating South American flavor.

Estructura was established in Maracay, Venezuela, in 1977. Led by keyboardist David Mamán, the band comprised Antonio Rassi, Agni Mogollón, Domenico Prioretti, Walton de Jongh, Marisela Pérez, and Maria Eugene Ciliberto. Despite the prevalent disco and punk rock trends during the late 1970s, the band recorded a long-lasting conceptual album, “Más Allá De Tu Mente” (Beyond Your Mind), in 1978, which is considered one of the most important works in the rock scene in Venezuela.

The album “Estrucutra” was broken into shorter pieces, although you can tell they were meant to be part of longer suites. This second album was recorded in 1980 without Walton de Jongh. The lineup consisted of Marisela Pérez on lead vocals, Antonio Rassi on guitar and vocals; María Eugenia Ciliberto on rhythm guitar and vocals, David Mamán on keyboards, Moog synth, piano, and vocals, Agni Mogollón on bass and vocals, and Domenico Prioretti on drums. Shortly after the album’s recording, the group disbanded.

Sadly, Marisela Pérez passed away in December 2014. Estructura is remembered as one of the first Venezuelan progressive rock bands, who made a significant contribution to the Latin American progressive scene.
