Dominic Sanderson – Impermanence (self-release, 2023)
British guitarist and composer Dominic Sanderson is one of the rising talents of progressive rock. His independently produced album “Impermanence” is a masterful work, inspired by various generations of progressive rock acts. You’ll find influences from the pioneering classics from the 1970s like the King Crimson and Pink Floyd, as well as neoprog band Marillion from the 1980s and more recent acts like Steven Wilson and the Swedish wave. However, despite these influences, Sanderson has developed a sound of his own.
Eagerly traversing diverse roles as both guitarist and producer, Sanderson’s voice transcends the conventional realm of lyrical expression, becoming an instrument of ethereal beauty, infusing each composition with resplendent layers of enchanting vocal textures.
On “Impermanence,” progressive rock fans are treated to the enchanting allure of the Mellotron, delicate acoustic passages, bewitching electric guitar solos, cathedral organ, and beguiling chamber music elements. Additionally, engaging time signature changes adorn the album, leading the listener through a labyrinthine sonic maze, while splendid orchestrations paint vivid musical landscapes. And lastly, a finely crafted lengthy epic.
The lineup includes: Dominic Sanderson on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals, Mellotron; Tristan Apperley on bass, Hammond organ, Mellotron, synthesizers, keyboards, violin, viola; Jacob Hackett on drums, congas, percussion, backing vocals; Aaron Butterworth on cello, Mellotron; Tyler Swindley on piano; Joshua Joyner on synthesizers; Dan Ratcliffe on violin; Abi Clark on flute; and Beatrice Overend on baritone saxophone.
