Solstein – Solstein (Is it Jazz? Records, 2023)
The minds of Jacob Holm-Lupo (renowned for his work with progressive rock band White Willow and more) and Keith Carlock (the force behind Steely Dan, Toto, John Legend, and Sting) converges to give birth to the eponymous debut album of their collaborative masterful work, “Solstein.”
Joining these musicians are the up-and-coming guitar prodigy Stian Larsen, alongside keyboard virtuosos Brynjar Dambo (of White Willow fame) and Bill Bressler. Together, this electric fusion powerhouse seamlessly combines the groovier elements of fusion with tantalizing touches of progressive rock and funk.
Solstein shatters preconceived notions and boldly ventures beyond the confines of traditional fusion. Drawing inspiration from the funk-infused, melodically rich realm of music, the band cites a wide range of influences such as The Crusaders, Idris Muhammed, early Bob James, and the iconic Herbie Hancock of the 1970s. Yet, owing to the members’ roots in progressive rock, the album also resonates with wonderfully-crafted echoes of the more jazz-inflected side of the genre, evoking the spirit of bands like Camel, Happy the Man, and the fabulous Canterbury scene. Moreover, the unmistakable love for Steely Dan, shared by Holm-Lupo and Carlock, pervades several tracks, infusing them with an irresistible allure.
