“Assemblage” (2023) is the superb debut album by German band Weite. The Berlin-based group delivers a spellbinding mix of instrumental psychedelic progressive rock and trancy Krautrock.
Weite is a new band formed by Nicholas DiSalvo (Elder, delving) and Michael Risberg (Elder) along with Ingwer Boysen and Ben Lubin. In winter 2022, Ingwer Boysen, who was a live member of Nick DiSalvo’s band along with guitarist Michael Risberg, came up with the idea of gathering like-minded friends to write and record an album in a short amount of time. They invited English guitarist Lubin to join them, and the quartet spent a week in the basement of an old brewery, sharing their musical interests and experimenting with different instruments.
They drew inspiration from 1960s and 1970s psychedelic music, krautrock, jazz, and repetitive motor beats. With the help of frequent collaborator Richard Behrens, they recorded the album at Big Snuff Studio, capturing the raw essence of their live session. Later, they added experimental overdubs to enhance the recordings.
“Assemblage” represents the creative freedom of these four artists as they explore music beyond their usual projects. It marks the beginning of a promising collaboration that looks set to continue in the future.
