Soft Machine, the acclaimed UK jazz-rock band, has a new album titled “Other Doors” after a five-year hiatus. The quartet consists of John Etheridge on guitars; Theo Travis on tenor and soprano sax, flutes, Fender Rhodes, and electronics; Freddy Baker on fretless bass; and John Marshall on drums. The album also features two guest appearances by former bassist Roy Babbington.
The recording took place at Temple Music Studios in July and August 2022. The album presents the band’s fiery and improvisational style, with intricate themes and explosive jamming. It includes new material as well as revisited tracks from their historical repertoire. The album marks Fred Baker’s studio debut with Soft Machine, and it also serves as a farewell to drummer John Marshall, who has decided to retire after a long and illustrious career.
