Suspension Bridge Workshop – 001 (Fluttery Records FLTTRY193, 2023)
Suspension Bridge Workshop, the instrumental rock ensemble based in Los Angeles, California, have released their inaugural album, 001, It is an enthralling exploration of the classic indie rock sound infused with a contemporary twist. The band includes core members Michael Bouvet (guitar, also of Arms Of Tripoli fame), Gabriel Lewis (bass), and Ben Pablo (drums); the trio has meticulously curated a dynamic collection of instrumental post-rock tracks that defy traditional structures.
Departing from the typical slow-build approach, Suspension Bridge Workshop seamlessly transitions between parts and moods, injecting a refreshing urgency into their musice. Produced and recorded in their Los Angeles studio and expertly mixed and mastered by Tommy Hazerian, the album embodies a back-to-basics rock ethos. With no vocalist in the lineup, each instrument articulates its voice, fostering a unique and authentic musical expression. Eschewing click tracks and elaborate studio effects underscores the band’s commitment to delivering a raw and genuine rock experience.
Titled 001, the album draws inspiration from a diverse spectrum of influences, ranging from the progressive rock stylings of Yes and King Crimson to the experimental post-rock nuances of Tortoise and Slint, and atmospheric soundscapes reminiscent of Mogwai.
Tracks like “Oh Crap, He’s Still Alive” explore heavier elements, while “This Is Not A Math Rock Song, This Song Is Sunday Bloody Sunday” introduces somber strings.
Notably, Suspension Bridge Workshop intentionally forgoes a traditional singer, opting to convey a universal emotional connection and range that transcends individual perspectives. The debut album resonates with authenticity, seamlessly mixing quiet and loud moments, a touch of mathy complexity, and an overarching commitment to crafting memorable songs.
