K’mono – Mind out of Mind (Apollon Records Prog, 2024)
Mind out of Mind is the captivating sophomore album by the Minneapolis-based progressive rock band K’mono. The meticulously crafted concept album immerses listeners in the enthralling narrative of a king exiled from his own realm. While rooted in the band’s signature influences of Yes, King Crimson, and Camel, Mind out of Mind ventures beyond.
Helmed by the songwriting talent of dual frontmen Jeffrey Carlson and Chad Fjerstad, each track leads the audience through a labyrinth of unexpected twists and turns. Meanwhile, Timothy Java’s percussive mastery adds a tantalizing rhythmic backbone.
Throughout Mind out of Mind you’ll find intricate synth work, inspired by the seductive melodies of Genesis, coupled with vocal harmonies reminiscent of the legendary Yes. Additionally, creative bass lines and subtle funk undertones add layers of complexity.
The lead vocals, infused with a distinctive flavor, add to the album’s timeless appeal, evoking echoes of progressive rock’s golden era. Most compositions unfold with the rhythmic dexterity and complex time signatures reminiscent of 1970s Yes and 1980s King Crimson, while paying homage to the majestic symphonic keyboards synonymous with Genesis.
However, amidst the symphonic splendor, one track stands out as a departure from the album’s cohesive progressive rock narrative. Track 2, with its pop-oriented sensibilities, diverges from the album’s progressive ethos.
Founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota, K’mono emerged as a rock trio, deeply inspired by the spirit of the pioneering progressive rock of the early 1970s. Return To The ‘E‘ was their debut full-length album, released in May 2021.
