Naya Baaz – Charm (Whirlwind Recordings, 2023)
Naya Baaz, the collaborative effort between remarkable virtuoso guitarist Rez Abbasi and Josh Feinberg, released its debut album, Charm, a few months ago. It marked a significant fusion of musical talents deeply rooted in diverse traditions. Abbasi, a Guggenheim Fellow, brings forth his expertise as a guitarist with a mix of contemporary jazz and South Asian influences, while Feinberg, proficient in Hindustani sitar and jazz bass, contributes his unique mastery to the ensemble.
Charm arose from the duo’s exploration of uncharted musical territory. Abbasi recalls the initial skepticism regarding the adaptability of his compositions to the sitar, yet Feinberg’s innovative instrument modification paved the way for their realization. The collaborative writing process yielded a cohesive suite of music, divided into three distinct sections, each introduced by its own brief prelude.
“Bekhayal,” the project’s inaugural piece, embodies a high-energy outset, highlighting the synergy between Abbasi’s composition and Feinberg’s sitar interpretation. The mesmerizing “Bhairavi” delves into traditional Indian music, reimagined through a jazz lens, while “Chick’s Magnet” pays homage to Chick Corea’s memorable musical legacy. At the same time, Vincent’s cello and Takeishi’s drums enrich the ensemble’s textures.
“No Lack Thereof” and “Charm” delve into philosophical themes, punctuated by intricate harmonies and compelling rhythms. Feinberg’s “Make it so” draws inspiration from Bach’s harmonies, elevated by Abbasi’s inventive arrangements. “Emancipation” and “Reaching” highlight the collaborative evolution of Feinberg’s piano compositions into sitar-led pieces, underscoring the project’s transformative nature.
The album culminates with “Peony,” a delicate duet between Feinberg’s classical melody and Abbasi’s harmonic embellishments, encapsulating the synthesis of their musical journeys. Feinberg reflects on the project’s significance, remarking on the dissolution of musical boundaries cultivated over decades.
