Rock Luminaries Reinvent a King Crimson Masterpiece

Various Artists – Reimagining the Court of the Crimson King (Purple Pyramid, 2024)

In the Court of the Crimson King, released in 1969, remains one of the most leading-edge debut albums in rock history, ushering a new era. Its innovative progressive rock compositions and thought-provoking lyrics have not only stood the test of time but have also influenced countless artists. The new album, Reimagining the Court of the Crimson King features a stellar lineup of rock legends that has come together to recreate this masterpiece in its entirety.

The album kicks off with a revamped version of “21st Century Schizoid Man,” featuring an electrifying ensemble: Rock Hall of Fame inductee Todd Rundgren; theatrical icon Arthur Brown; former King Crimson saxophonist Mel Collins; guitar virtuoso Chris Poland (Megadeth, OHM); and drumming powerhouse Ian Paice (Deep Purple). Rundgren’s commanding vocal performance breathes new life into this classic.

While “21st Century Schizoid Man” is undeniably a cornerstone of progressive rock, I find myself gravitating more toward the symphonic rock masterworks in King Crimson’s catalog. “I Talk to the Wind” stands out with its exquisite flute melodies, exceptional vocals, and intricate guitar work. “Epitaph” is equally sublime, featuring majestic Mellotron, innovative drumming, and deeply emotive vocals. And who could forget “Moonchild”? Marty Friedman of Megadeth delivers fantastic, intricate, and lengthy guitar solos that are nothing short of brilliant. Then there’s “The Court of the Crimson King,” unforgettable with its signature guitar variations by Steve Hillage.

The CD version adds even more value with two bonus tracks: an alternate version of “21st Century Schizoid Man,” featuring Brian Auger on keyboards in a wonderful tribute to Keith Emerson, and an instrumental take on the same track.

Aside from the musicians mentioned earlier, the cast includes current King Crimson vocalist/guitarist Jakko Jakszyk, rock veterans Joe Lynn Turner and James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Jah Wobble (PIL & Eno collaborator), and Hawkwind members Alan Davey, Paul Rudolph, and Nik Turner.

Drummer Paice says “I had the great privilege of seeing Crimson live in London just after the first album was released, a really inventive, wonderful band. We in Deep Purple thought they were really great!
