Commodore Trio – Communal – EP (2024)
Joel Tucker’s debut EP with the Commodore Trio introduces a distinct facet of his artistry. Communal EP presents Joel’s multifaceted electric guitar alongside Brendan Keller-Tuburg on bass and piano, and Justin Clark on drums. With this EP, Tucker takes a departure from conventional jazz. Instead, he treats the listener to a forward-thinking, extremely gratifying mix of finely crafted fusion, progressive rock and cinematic ambient music influences.
The opening track, “We Are Surprised,” sets a spellbinding tone and incorporates a reading of U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limon’s poem of the same name. On the other hands, things get more intricate on “Communal” characterized by engaging polyrhythms. It highlights Tucker’s electric guitar skill and Keller-Tuburg’s improvisational piano solo.
The EP progresses with a two-part “Soundscape.” Part 1 introduces a nice build that intensifies as the piece progresses. Part 2 offers meditative contemporary jazz with progrock elements.
The last track on the EP is the anthemic, epic jazz-rock composition “Switzerland.”
Musicians: Joel Tucker on electric guitar; Brendan Keller-Tuberg on bass and piano; and Justin Clark on drums.
