Astral Magic – Shadows over Jupiter Remixed (2024)
Astral Magic is one of the most prolific acts in the psychedelic progressive rock sphere. This recording contains mesmerizing remixed versions of the Shadows over Jupiter album. The project is the brainchild of Finnish multi-instrumentalist Santtu Laakso, former bassist and synth player of the band Dark Sun.
The album excels in its use of mind-bending psychedelic and space rock elements, with Laakso’s signature guitar and synth explorations driving the experience.
Favorite tracks include the dreamy, synth rich “Thousand Eyes”; the title track ‘Shadows over Jupiter” anchored by an epic, prog-rock guitar solo; the transfixing psychedelic, blues-infused jam “Heaven on Earth”; the fabulous guitar interplay on “Astral Dreams” that leaves a lasting impression; and the Floydian “Lost in the Dark.”
Other notable tracks include “Teleportation” which offers a wild and trippy ride through the cosmos. The closing track, “Slowburn,” is a fitting finale, featuring soaring guitars and synth melodies that linger in the mind long after the music fades.
However, not all tracks hit the mark. “Cult of the Dead,” with its hard-rocking edge, feels dated. Likewise, the annoying free jazz saxophone on “Interdimensional Connections” might not resonate with all listeners.
Tracks 1-9 were originally released on limited edition tape by Weird Beard Records (WBT016) in 2021. In addition, this release includes 3 bonus tracks.
Astral Magic, Laakso’s brainchild since 2020, has quickly become known for its rapid and consistent output, often introducing a new release each month. Laakso collaborates with various international musicians, collectively known as psychonauts, to create a series of engaging psychedelic progressive rock recordings that pay homage to his roots while forging a path towards outer space frontiers.
