Dafnis Prieto – 3 Sides of the Coin (Dafnison Music, 2024)

Celebrated drummer and composer Dafnis Prieto returns with his tenth album, 3 Sides of the Coin, set for release on September 27, 2024. This album commemorates 25 years since his arrival in the United States and his 50th birthday. It also signifies the studio return of his acclaimed Sí o Sí Quartet, featuring Peter Apfelbaum (woodwinds), Martin Bejerano (piano), and Ricky Rodríguez (electric bass).

3 Sides of the Coin explores the concept of perception and interpretation, using the metaphor of a coin to represent how individuals perceive the world differently. Prieto’s inventive and dynamic compositions combine various musical influences, from Cuban roots and jazz to funk, South Indian, and European classical music, creating a rich, multifaceted set.

Each track on the album reflects a specific theme or concept, starting with “Caprichos Cubanos,” dedicated to Cuban culture, and continuing with pieces like “Conga Ingenua,” a nostalgic look at Prieto’s early musical experiences. Meanwhiole, “Two Sides of the Coin,” which plays with interwoven themes and perceptions. Other tracks, such as “Humanoid” and “Funky Humanoid,” explore futuristic themes, while “Alba” is inspired by genetic science. The album concludes with “The Happiest Boy in Town,” a tribute to jazz icon Charlie Parker.

Prieto’s long-standing collaboration with his band members and key contributors, including co-producer Eric Oberstein and engineer Mike Marciano, is evident throughout the album, resulting in a tight, cohesive and expertly executed project.
