Steve Roach – One Day of Forever (Projekt, 2024)
Steve Roach’s One Day of Forever (2024) is a deeply atmospheric album that expands on the ambient soundscapes he has become known for. The album ventures into themes of memory, time, and emotion, creating a reflective journey through five long-form pieces. It builds on the minimal, elemental electronic music approach Roach established in his previous release, Reflections in Repose.
The music’s foundation rests on the Mellotron, specifically a digital version of the original 1963 electro-mechanical instrument, and the warm tones of the Oberheim OB-X8 synthesizer. These instruments create the album’s impressionistic atmosphere.
The centerpiece track, “One Day,” features a collaboration with electric violist Linda Kohanov, intertwining western classical and ambient elements. The final track incorporates additional acoustic elements, including Serena Gabriel’s harmonium and Kohanov’s viola.
Steve reflects, “This music reaches towards the moments between moments, leading to the eternal now. Each day provides the opportunity to connect to a sense and knowing of forever in our own individual ways; it lives within my ears, eyes, heart and soul, nourished by the ineffable and my desire is to embrace each day… into forever.”
