Bruce Lofgren’s “Earthly and Cosmic Tales” Offers a Fresh Fusion of Jazz and Chamber Music

Bruce Lofgren – Earthly and Cosmic Tales (Night Bird, 2024)

Los Angeles guitarist and arranger Bruce Lofgren has released Earthly and Cosmic Tales, an innovative sextet album that mixes original compositions with modern standards. Lofgren’s arrangements include an eclectic mix of clarinet, cello, vibraphone, guitar, bass, and subtle percussion, that fuses western classical chamber music and contemporary jazz influences.

The album opens with the track “Summer Passage,” dedicated to Lofgren’s parents and infused with personal meaning. Other highights include “Tripsy,” a playful nod to Jobim’s “Triste,” enriched by jazz improvisations and references to classics like “Donna Lee.” Lofgren also includes carefully selected covers, such as Van Dyke Parks’ “Orange Crate Art,” adding a nostalgic, folk-inspired dimension, and Stevie Wonder’s “Creepin’,” which was a last-minute addition that brings a funky, soulful touch.

The instrumental lineup enhances each track’s narrative quality, as Lofgren’s choice of musicians was deliberate. Craig Fundiga’s vibraphone improvisations bring energy, while Hope Easton’s cello adds versatility across genres. Geoff Nudell’s woodwind versatility, from clarinet to saxophone, lends richness to the arrangements, and Randy Landas’ bass work gives depth on tracks like “Fields of Praise.”

With a sound more akin to the Turtle Island Quartet than traditional jazz ensembles, Earthly and Cosmic Tales is melodic and uplifting, balancing thoughtful composition with a relaxed, summery feel. Lofgren’s arrangements emphasize clarity and intimacy, relying on instrumental interplay rather than drum-driven rhythms, giving each song an organic and introspective quality. As a consequence, this collection serves as an antidote to the fast pace of modern life.

Musicians: Bruce Lofgren on guitar; Geoff Nudell on clarinet; Hope Easton on cello; Craig Fundiga on vibraphone; and Randy Landas on bass.
