The album cover for Koenjihyakkei – Live at Club Goodman features an homage to traditional Japanese ukiyo-e art. It depicts three exaggerated, expressive figures in period attire, rendered in muted tones of pink, beige, and red. The title is split between Japanese characters and Roman letters, with retro-futuristic typography.

Zeuhl or High Water: Koenjihyakkei’s Live Set Defies Labels

Following the critical acclaim of their 2018 album Dhorimviskha, named one of Bandcamp Daily’s Albums of the Year, Japan’s Koenjihyakkei recorded a live performance at Tokyo’s Club Goodman during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the venue was empty, the performance was livestreamed globally, capturing the band’s genre-defying sound in real time. Now, drummer-composer Tatsuya Yoshida has returned to those original recordings, meticulously mixing and mastering them for the group’s first-ever double live album.

Live at Club Goodman spans over 100 minutes of material and draws from all five of the band’s studio albums. The set weaves together progressive rock, jazz fusion, symphonic elements, and neoclassicism, delivered with the intensity of hard rock and the anti-conformist stance of Rock in Opposition.

The release arrives shortly after the reissue of the band’s 2005 album Angherr Shisspa, a masterful Zeuhl album.

To support the release, Koenjihyakkei will embark on an international tour, with performances scheduled across Asia, Europe, and North America.
