Monk Business: Diego Piñera Reworks a Classic with Jazz Heavyweights

Diego Piñera – Evidence (self-release, 2025)

Berlin-based drummer and composer Diego Piñera (Uruguay) brings an intrepid, rhythmically complex voice to modern jazz. Known for fusing Latin American roots with intricate polyrhythms, he draws equally from jazz tradition and experimental structures, highly technical yet instinctively expressive beats.

His new EP Evidence marks a fresh chapter, featuring bassist John Patitucci and pianist David Kikoski. Together, the trio reinterprets Thelonious Monk’s “Evidence,” reframing the composition through Piñera’s distinctive rhythmic lens. The result is a focused yet expansive exploration of groove, tradition, and innovation.

Evidence was developed as a spontaneous studio session recorded in New York without rehearsal, yet carried by the intuitive chemistry of its personnel.

Famed bassist John Patitucci, a longtime collaborator of Chick Corea; and Kikoski, associated with Roy Haynes and the Mingus Big Band, lend generational weight and stylistic fluency to the recording. Their stunning interplay with Piñera results in four tightly executed performances, originally intended as a two-track session. The trio’s responsiveness and shared vocabulary elevate the material, especially on the Monk title track, which serves as both homage and departure.

Although brief, Evidence offers a compelling snapshot of Piñera’s artistic voice, one that bridges continents, styles, and eras with clarity and conviction.

Originally released as a limited edition of 100 CDs, the physical run is now sold out. The EP is available for digital download.
