Camel – Earthrise – Live at the Marquee 1974 (Esoteric Recordings, 2026)
British progressive rock band Camel was at its prime in 1974 when they performed at the iconic Marquee club in London. Esoteric Records has now released a superb 2-CD set that contains that outstanding concert, and it’s a keeper. The recording quality is excellent, mixed from the original 16-track master tapes by Stephen W Tayler.
What you get are extended live versions of material from Camel’s most cherished musical compositions, primarily from their album Mirage and a preview of their album Music Inspired by The Snow Goose. This is progressive rock at its best, with long compositions, stellar guitar and flute work from Andy Latimer and equally good keyboard solos and interplay by Peter Bardens. Composed primarily by Latimer and Bardens, Camel efortlessly weaved rock, western classical music, jazz, blues, and even a few charming folk elements into their music.
Earthrise – Live at The Marquee 1974 contains now classic, extraordinary, boldly inventive and timelessly crafted pieces such as the Lord of the rings-inspired suite “Nimrodel / The Procession / The White Rider”, “Supertwister”, “Mystic Queen”, “The Snow Goose”, “Freefall”, their unforgettable hit “Lady Fantasy” and much more.
This album serves as a perfect introduction to the sound of Camel as well as a must-have for Camel fans and progressive rock lovers overall.
