Borne on the Solar Wind Boxed Set Highlights Early Jade Warrior Recordings

Jade Warrior – Borne on the Solar Wind – The Vertigo Albums (Esoteric, 2024)

This 3 CD boxed set brings together the early material of one of the most innovative British bands of the progressive rock era. Indeed, Jade Warriors were pioneers of progressive rock and world fusion, who masterfully added traditional global roots music elements to their music.

Formed in 1970, Jade Warrior‘s original lineup included Tony Duhig (guitars) and Jon Field (flutes, percussion), both former members of the psychedelic group July, along with Glyn Havard (bass, vocals).

After signing with Philips’ progressive Vertigo label, the band recorded their self-titled debut album in March 1971. This album established Jade Warrior’s distinctive sound, skillfully mixing world music, melodic and ethereal ambient elements, and heavier guitar-driven rock. Upon release, the album received critical acclaim and has since gained legendary status for its inventiveness.

In November 1971, Jade Warrior released their second album, Released. By then, the band had expanded to include drummer Allan Price, adding new rhythmic dimensions to their sound. The sessions also featured a guest appearance by saxophonist Dave Connors. Released marked a significant evolution from their debut, featuring standout tracks such as “Three-Horned Dragon King,” “Eyes on You,” and the epic 14-minute “Barazinbar.”

Last Autumn’s Dream, the band’s third and final album for Vertigo, is considered their most structured and fully realized work during this period. It includes notable tracks like “A Winter’s Tale,” “Snake,” “Dark River,” and “Borne on the Solar Wind.”

This Esoteric Recordings release features an illustrated booklet with an essay.
