The album cover for Ice Breaking by the Dag Arnesen Trio features a close-up of a fractured ice formation, illuminated by golden and blue reflections against a deep black background. The typography is clean and modern, with "Ice Breaking" in a cool blue hue. The names of bassist Magne Thormodsæter and drummer Øyvind Skarbø appear beneath the title, while the Losen Records logo sits subtly in the corner.

Breaking the Ice with Dag Arnesen’s ‘Ice Breaking’

Dag Arnesen – Ice Breaking (Losen, 2024)

Dag Arnesen’s Ice Breaking presents an exploration of jazz, introducing original compositions with new stylistic approaches. With all but two tracks freshly composed, the album highlights his commitment to innovation as both a pianist and composer.

While melody has traditionally been central to Arnesen’s work, this album shifts focus toward rhythm and harmony in select pieces. “A New One” reflects his melodic strengths, whereas “After Dinner” emphasizes intricate chord progressions, revealing his depth as a composer.

Among the album’s personal touches, “Sarah” is a moving tribute to his family’s cat, continuing his tradition of writing compositions for pets.

“Bim Bam Bom,” originally conceived 40 years ago under the influence of Miles Davis’ jazz-rock fusion stage, is reimagined in a trio setting, bridging past and present influences.

“A Special Memory,” written two decades ago, serves as a reflection on inspiration. Ironically, Arnesen admits to forgetting the memory that sparked its creation.

The album also explores themes of self-doubt and artistic perseverance. “That’s OK” was initially met with Arnesen’s uncertainty, but he ultimately embraced its value, delivering a message of creative confidence.

Supporting Arnesen on Ice Breaking are two accomplished Norwegian musicians. Bassist Magne Thormodsæter, known for collaborations with Terje Rypdal, Karin Krog, and John Surman, brings depth to the trio. Percussionist Øyvind Skarbø, an award-winning artist with expertise in Norwegian, Cuban, and Nigerian traditional music, adds dazzling beats.

Rooted in western classical training and inspired by Bergen’s rich musical legacy, including the influence of Edvard Grieg, Arnesen continues to push jazz forward.
